INTERVIEW | CONEXÃO INTERNACIONAL: The succesful journey of Renato Cecin and his passion for Electronic Music

Português

It is with great pleasure that I, Ana Paula, present this project with the Colors DJ magazine. Together we created the Conexão Internacional (International Connection) column, where we will speak with the greatest talents and entrepreneurs in the electronic scene around the world. To start our project, we chose an icon from the Brazilian electronic scene. Owner of a unique sound, Renato Cecin lifts up the dance floor wherever he goes, leaving  his mark and the public thirsty for more. Known throughout Brazil and the world, Renato told us about his story.

I’ve always been passionate about music. In the 80s, I used to listen to Radio shows during the weekends. Every Saturday had a special edition with guest DJs mixed their  live sets and I was going crazy with the mixes. Then, for the next week, I used to practice at home on two record players trying to do the same thing. My passion for playing music is very old.

When did you realize that music would be your purpose? Did you learn any other profession?

I always thought my future would be as a designer or an architect, because I was very good at drawing. I started architecture school but I didn’t finish it. I studied plastic arts and I came to work in that area, but it didn’t last long. I started organizing parties at the clubs in São Paulo where I lived. The parties, known as “Projeto N” due to the fact that they were held at Clube Náutico, became a success, and in four editions 600 people had already gathered. I was 24 years old, in that “amateur” phase, I played all night by myself. My sound was very pop and based on the radio hits from FM. Three years later, at 27 years old and with a much more interesting musical background, influenced by some travels I had done abroad, I joined forces with three other friends and we became partners in the creation of a nightclub called OPERA. At that moment my professional story began.

How was your first experience DJing at clubs?

A dear DJ and friend Mauro Borges (known for commanding the pickups at Club Massivo) invited me to perform at Club Disco Fever as a DJ. We already shared the DJ Booth, in the extinct Bunker, X Demente and The Week. I confess that your extensive musical research has always caught my attention.

Tell us about your musical references.

I used to travel to the U.S. a lot, and back then I had the opportunity to become a regular at clubs like Salvation in Miami and also the iconic Roxy and Twilo in New York City. Abel Aguilera in Miami, Victor Calderone and Junior Vazquez in NYC became my absolute references in the beginning. Soon, other names like Peter Rauhofer and Manny Lehman also influenced me. After listening to them at night or at big parties. I knew exactly which vinyl records I should buy to bring to Brazil. This task required a lot of time and investment. But it was worth it. I quickly became recognized for it.

Thinking about starting a career as a producer?

Music production has become essential nowadays. I keep studying and learning. I have my productions and with partnerships I create the material exclusive and different that is part of my repertoire.

Looking back on a career over fifteen years as an artist. What do you think about the changes that have occurred in the LGBT electronic scene since then?

In the last 20 years, technology took a giant leap. I believe that music production programs, smartphones and their applications were mainly responsible  for those changes in behavior and in the sound that dominates the dance floors. Before smartphones, people went out to flirt, talk… We used to go to places to meet people. Nowadays social networks have revolutionized everything. Regarding music, it also became accessible. Virtual stores. dj packs for sale and each DJ can choose the software that best suits you to create their own music. The DJ/Producer imprints its brand and characteristics. Therefore, recognition requires commitment and dedication. With all these facts, the competition became bigger. It’s a sign of the times.

You are considered one of the biggest names in Brazilian electronic music and Worldwide. Renato Cecin is synonymous with a good party and many beginner DJs look up to you. What advice do you have for the new generation?

Dream and work on your goals. It’s the dreams that move us. Study, persist and have great engagement. It just depends on you. Who wants it, does it.

Tell us about a party or memorable moment in your career.

There have been many notable parties. Two that I can mention were: Ultra Demente, at Fundição Progresso. There, you and I had the opportunity to perform in the famous Caldeirão. MissKitten also played at Arena da Fundição, and  that was historical! Another event was Acquaplay, where my performance took place between DJs Tony Moran and Peter Rauhofer’s sets. That was also an unforgettable night. I got a nice compliment from Master Peter on social media, I was flattered.

What do you like to listen to when you are not working?

I have a quite eclectic musical taste. I flow from MPB, Cocteau Twins to Miles Davis. But, of course, it’s electronic music that takes up most of my attention.

Tell us about your experience around the world. What and when was your first international event? Is there any place you’d like to play?

My first international gig was in 1999, in Atlanta, USA. It was the Scarlet Ball party, I shared the dance floor with Victor Calderone. I’ve played in a lot of places. I consider myself blessed! Music took me everywhere I wanted to go. I thank God every day. Each place brings a surprise and a realization. But the world is huge and there will always be a new place to hold a great party.

Renato, thank you so much for your participation on this project. I have always admired your work. And I am sure we’ll have a lot of good things ahead. Finally, would you like to talk about future projects and leave a message for your fans?

Ana, I don’t even need to tell you about the respect and admiration I have for you. Thanks for the invitation and affection. I still have many projects and you will soon find out (lol). The message I leave is always one of gratitude, for all the affection and respect I have always received. From the producers and the public. I love playing and I dedicated my life to that. Wherever there is music, there will be love and joy. A huge kiss to everyone!
